"Thunder" (Thunder)

Over Thanksgiving, I met up with Mr. Regular and he reviewed my 2014 Civic Si sedan; that review was just posted.
He seems... meh.
I’m OK with that. I look at the Civic Si as a car that does nothing particularly great, but does an awful lot of things quite well. And... if my ‘07 Civic Si is any indication, one that barely depreciates.
Enjoy!

P.S. The plate refers to flying - ZERO’AGL states I am at zero feet above ground level. One might say “grounded to the ground”, in fact. As it’s a car... I hope it stays that way.

I was wondering wether it was you. Nice!
The review was quite nice. It’s pretty much how I view the current Si. And I like the bit about being “a car guy".

Does the blurb at the end mean that there will be a Harold Slovinski review?

How did you go about getting ahold of him?

That I don’t know.
Mr. Regular was talking in Harold voice for a good chunk of the recording of the review, but when he advised he was nearing completion, he did mention there was just a blurb of Harold at the end. I had replied to his email referring to him as “Mr. Slovinski”, after all.

It
is
silly that honda still promotes VTEC.

I think he was ‘meh’ on the car. The main focus wasn’t the car, but being open to the idea of the car as a car guy. O thought it was weird that the video was only 4:22. That ain’t no review!

I had recognized some settings for other reviews as being around Reading, PA. I live near Raleigh, NC, but have relatives in Reading. Heading up there for Thanksgiving, I reached out to him well in advance to see if he was game; we met up in Lancaster, PA, to review mine and a couple other cars.

As the owner of an ‘07 Si, and now this ‘14, yes.
The ‘07 didn’t need any indicators of the cam changeover. The entire character of the car changed. All that had was a light that blinked as you approached redline, then went solid red for the remaining 300 RPM to fuel cutoff.
The ‘14, in contrast, has a VTEC indicator light, four yellow ‘below torque peak’ lights, then two red lights indicating ‘past torque peak’. I’m surprised he didn’t cover that in the video. It’s like it’s screaming at you “HEY, I’M FAST!!!! NO REALLY, I AM!!!!” Granted, it is quicker than the 8th gen Si with its 2.0L I4, but subjectively, it doesn’t feel it.

When he drove it, he seemed to ‘get it’ when merging onto whatever highway it was. His conclusion was that NOW he got it - the car is made for merging. Wind it up, and it’s easy to merge.
But my perspective is that it’s definitely a “sporty” car, not a “sports” car. Big difference.

Nice!! I wasn’t going to watch that but now I will. How’s your nav treating you? Mine (2010 civic) is done already at 60K. It shuts itself off randomly, but only when you’re using it to navigate. Thanks honda!

Really looking forward to seeing this when I get home (school computers=no Youtube)
Does he talk about this gen Civic in general or mostly just the SI?
As a 13 LX owner I want to know

Hmmm.
My ‘07 had the little joystick on the nav fail; I had mechanical breakdown insurance on it, so for the $250 deductible, I got it replaced. Actual cost was something like $2000 IIRC. Otherwise, mine was fine on my 8th gen.
On the ‘14, the lack of ANY PHYSICAL CONTROLS is maddening. I do need to take it in, as it quite clearly should accept more than 5 saved addresses per address book, but it just isn’t accepting any more. Otherwise, though, it’s fine.
That said... I do run Waze in parallel on my phone on any trip outside the local area. The car has traffic info, but I just like Waze better. The location of police is invaluable, of course.

I’d call it largely Si specific.

I think Honda killed the idea of a Civic sports car. Until the type R is released anyways. A lot of manufacturers are destroying the terms sports car. Notably Ford and Chevy.

Agreed.
I almost went all the way to pulling the trigger on a Focus ST before going with the Si. I was all in for the ST... but my wife, with 8 herniated discs, simply could not ride in the ST at all. The Si, she could at least tolerate when needed for local drives.
But the Focus ST was a beast by comparison. Some aspects of it felt chintzy, but the overall took the performance aspect and dialed it up very enjoyably.

I think Mr. Regular’s bias shows in this one. The Si is a genuinely fun car to drive, but it seems like he enjoys peoples’ shitboxes more than he enjoyed your car, which I don’t fully understand. I agree with some of the things he says, but not most of it.

Going on the FP soon! You’ll have to tell everyone what it’s like to be in an RCR review.

Sweet! Will do!
Short form: very cool. In fact, freakin’ cold. It was frigid the day we were there, and there is a lot of standing around to be done in the course of capturing these videos.
Really, though, I was most impressed at the wealth of knowledge assembled. We all went to lunch after, and there were multiple ‘deep dives’ taken into minutiae about various vehicles.

I was Meh. It’s not the Civic’s fault. It is certinly not your fault. It’s the Grand National’s fault. I finished writing the Buick Grand National narrative, lying on the floor to keep my BONER DOWN. The GN was like going back in time with all the knowledge you have now and turning into the OG Mac Daddy of the senior all-night-party.
I was coming off THAT feeling to write about the Civic Si. “Yea, it’s a car,” I thought. And I thought about how The 2014 Civic Si is good, but it suffers from the weight of its own legacy. I mean... Honda Civic CRX Si? The DX-series Si? Those were ANGRY cars!
The 2014 Si is setting down with the WRX for an early dinner at Kauffman’s Chicken in Bethal, PA.
We all grow up. Even Eddie Vedder.

Yeah, my family also owns a 2014, reaching over to the touch screen all the time is pretty irritating. Not the beat design.
